What Is NK Cell Therapy?

How Do NK Cells Work?

NK (Natural Killer) cells are part of the body’s innate immune system — the first line of defense.
They circulate in the blood and are found in the liver, spleen and bone marrow.

What sets NK cells apart is that, unlike T cells, they do not require prior antigen presentation (sensitization) to identify a threat. They can recognize cells that are stressed, mutated or virally infected as “non-self” and respond quickly and spontaneously. Through specialized surface receptors, NK cells distinguish healthy cells from abnormal ones and, when a threat is detected, release cytotoxic substances (perforin and granzyme) to eliminate the target cell in a controlled way.

Cells are sourced from healthy donors, processed and infused into the patient. Thanks to the unique biology of NK cells, this approach carries a low risk of graft-versus-host disease (GvHD) and offers “off-the-shelf” potential.

CAR-NK Cell Therapy (Next Generation)

NK cells are genetically engineered to recognize cancer cells more precisely. In clinical research, CAR-NK is regarded as a potentially safer alternative to CAR-T therapy and is one of the most closely watched developments in cellular immunotherapy.

  • – Off-the-shelf potential: NK cells may be used across different patients without strict matching.
  • – Multiple mechanisms of action: NK cells can target abnormal cells through direct cytotoxicity, antibody-dependent cellular cytotoxicity (ADCC) and cytotoxic granule release.

Important: CAR-NK and most NK cell therapies remain largely in the early clinical-research stage and are not yet established as standard treatment for most cancers.
